Longview ISD to approve 200 new ‘smart boards’ for classrooms

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - For some teachers, they are indispensable: smart boards. The Longview ISD School Board wants to spend 1.6 million dollars on 200 new boards that go way beyond what a chalk board can do.

Constance Rhoades is a big advocate of the smart board at the front of her third-grade class at Bramlette Elementary in Longview. She said the board is her best friend.

“These kids spend all day and all night at home on their tablet or on their phone, or on TV or video games. So, we have to learn now how to make learning fun and relatable, and I think the smart board does that,” Rhoades said.

She said when she was in school everyone stayed at their desk and certainly didn’t listen to songs to learn things, but things have changed.

“And these days, especially after COVID, we needed to get them up and give their minds more of a break, and the interactive part helps with that,” Rhoades said.

She said she can send what’s on the smart board directly to the student’s computers.

“The kids in the very back can see it up close and personal as if they’re doing it on a piece of paper in front of them,” Rhoades said.

She said the boards have improved over the years, and that’s why Longview ISD Assistant Superintendent of Finance Wayne Guidry said the school board wants to purchase 200 more smart boards.

“We’ve got two campuses, two and a half, that we’re just trying to wrap up getting smart boards in every classroom. And so, this is just the final phase of smart board implementation,” Guidry said.

Paislee Johnston said the smart board makes learning fun.

“I like listening to the music, and I really like music and stuff. But, I also like to learn a lot,” Johnston said.

Every student in this class gets a turn at the board, which also makes the kids more comfortable with being in front of a crowd. Rhoades said it comes down to being engaged.

“I think that is probably the biggest word in education right now, is how to engage the students,” Rhoades said.

If they took away the smart boards and gave teachers a chalk board?

“I’d quit,” Rhoades said.

Rhoades said the boards have improved quite a bit in the last few years, and that they give every student one-on-one interactive learning time with the teacher.
